Not all pipe can handle it.<\/p>\n<p>**<a href=\"\/tag\/material\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>material<\/strong><\/a> Selection for Geothermal**<\/p>\n<p>For geothermal service, you need steel that handles both temperature and <a href=\"\/tag\/corrosion\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>corrosion<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/carbon-steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/carbon\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>carbon<\/strong><\/a> steel<\/strong><\/a> (<strong>\u00a0API<\/strong> 5L, <a href=\"\/tag\/astm-a106\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/astm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>astm<\/strong><\/a> a106<\/strong><\/a>)** \u2014 Works for lower temperature <a href=\"\/tag\/well\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>well<\/strong><\/a>s (under 350\u00b0F) with proper corrosion <a href=\"\/tag\/protection\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>protection<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Chrome-moly steel (<a href=\"\/tag\/astm-a335\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>astm a335<\/strong><\/a> P11, P22)** \u2014 For higher temperatures. The chromium adds <a href=\"\/tag\/corrosion-resistance\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Corrosion resistance<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/stainless-steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Stainless steel<\/strong><\/a> (316, 316L)** \u2014 For the most corrosive geothermal brines. More expensive, but sometimes necessary.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Duplex stainless** \u2014 For extreme conditions. <a href=\"\/tag\/high-strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>High <a href=\"\/tag\/strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strength<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"\/tag\/excellent\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>excellent<\/strong><\/a> corrosion resistance.<\/p>\n<p>**Where the Pipe Goes**<\/p>\n<p>A geothermal power plant has several piping systems:<\/p>\n<p>1. **<a href=\"\/tag\/production\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>production<\/strong><\/a> wells** \u2014 Bringing <a href=\"\/tag\/hot\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hot<\/strong><\/a> brine or steam to the <a href=\"\/tag\/surface\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>surface<\/strong><\/a>.
