And as hydrogen projects scale up, we need Pipelines to move it from production to consumption. But hydrogen isn’t natural gas. The pipe requirements are different.

Let’s talk about steel pipe for hydrogen pipeline projects and what you need to know.

**The Hydrogen Challenge**

Here’s the thing about hydrogen: it’s the smallest molecule in the universe. It leaks through everything. And at high pressures, it can cause something called hydrogen embrittlement in certain steels.

That means you can’t just use any pipe for hydrogen service. You need to be smart about material selection.

**What Makes Hydrogen Pipe Different**

Hydrogen pipeline has some unique requirements:

– **Higher pressures** — Hydrogen pipelines often run at 1,000-1,500 PSI, higher than natural gas
– **Material compatibility** — Not all steels handle hydrogen well. You need to avoid susceptible grades.
– **Leak tightness** — Hydrogen leaks easily. Joints and connections need to be extra tight.
– **Purity requirements** — For fuel cell applications, hydrogen needs to be very pure. The pipe can’t contaminate it.

**Steel Grades for Hydrogen Service**

Here’s what works for hydrogen pipelines:

– ** API 5L X42 to X60** — Lower strength grades are generally better for hydrogen service. They’re less susceptible to embrittlement.
– **astm a106 Grade B** — Standard seamless pipe, good for hydrogen service.
– **ASTM A53 Grade B** — common welded pipe, acceptable for many hydrogen applications.
– **Avoid high-strength grades** — X80 and above can be problematic for hydrogen. Stick with X60 or lower unless you have specific testing data.

**What the Spec Looks Like**

Here’s a typical spec for hydrogen pipeline:

– **size**: 12″ to 36″ for transmission, smaller for distribution
– **Material**: API 5L X52 or X60, PSL 2
– **type**: Seamless or lsaw, depending on size
– **Testing**: Enhanced NDE, 100% UT or RT of welds
– **coating**: Standard external coating (FBE or 3LPE), Internal coating optional
– **Testing pressure**: 1.5x design pressure, held for extended time

**Blending Hydrogen with Natural Gas**

Here’s an interesting trend: some projects are blending hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines. Up to 20% hydrogen by volume. This can work with existing infrastructure, but you need to:

– **Verify material compatibility** — Not all existing pipe is suitable
– **Check compression equipment** — Compressors may need modification
– **Update safety protocols** — Hydrogen has different safety characteristics
– **Monitor for embrittlement** — Regular inspection and testing

**What to Watch For**

Hydrogen pipeline projects are still relatively new. Here’s what to be careful about:

– **code compliance** — Standards are still evolving. ASME B31.12 covers hydrogen piping.
– **Supplier experience** — Not all pipe Suppliers have hydrogen service experience. Ask for references.
– **Testing requirements** — Hydrogen service may require additional testing beyond standard pipeline practice.
– **long-term performance** — Data on long-term hydrogen service is still being collected.

**The Bottom Line**

Hydrogen pipelines are the future of clean energy infrastructure. Steel pipe can handle the job, but you need to spec it right. choose appropriate grades, follow the codes, and work with suppliers who understand hydrogen service.

Because the energy transition depends on getting this right.

Hydrogen is getting a lot of attention as a clean energy carrier.
