Both need to be right for your well conditions. Get either one wrong, and you&#8217;re looking at serious problems.<\/p>\n<p>**The <a href=\"\/tag\/grades\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/grade\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>grade<\/strong><\/a>s<\/strong><\/a> That Matter**<\/p>\n<p>API 5CT defines a bunch of <a href=\"\/tag\/steel\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>steel<\/strong><\/a> grades. Here are the ones you&#8217;ll actually use:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **H40, <a href=\"\/tag\/j55\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/j55-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>J55<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/k55\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>K55<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Light duty. Shallow wells, low <a href=\"\/tag\/pressure\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>pressure<\/strong><\/a>. J55 is the workhorse for surface casing.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/n80\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>N80<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 The sweet spot for intermediate casing. <a href=\"\/tag\/good\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>good<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>strength<\/strong><\/a>, reasonable cost.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/l80\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/l80-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>L80<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 When you&#8217;re dealing with sour gas (H2S), L80 is your go-to. It&#8217;s <a href=\"\/tag\/resistant\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>resistant<\/strong><\/a> to sulfide stress cracking.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<strong> C90<\/strong>, <a href=\"\/tag\/t95\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>T95<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 <a href=\"\/tag\/high\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>high<\/strong><\/a>er strength sour <a href=\"\/tag\/service\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>service<\/strong><\/a> grades. For challenging well conditions.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/p110\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/p110-2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>P110<\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 <a href=\"\/tag\/high-strength\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>High strength<\/strong><\/a> for deep, <a href=\"\/tag\/high-pressure\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>high-pressure<\/strong><\/a> wells. Not for sour service unless you <a href=\"\/tag\/spec\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>spec<\/strong><\/a>ify the right variant.<br \/>\n&#8211; **<a href=\"\/tag\/q125\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Q125<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 The big gun. Ultra-high strength for extreme conditions.<\/p>\n<p>**What to Look For in Your Casing String**<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the checklist I run through on every project:<\/p>\n<p>1. **Body yield strength** \u2014 Does the <a href=\"\/tag\/pipe\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><strong> Pipe<\/strong><\/strong><\/a> have the strength to handle the loads? Tension, compression, burst, collapse \u2014 all four need to check out.<br \/>\n2. **<a href=\"\/tag\/connection\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>connection<\/strong><\/a> integrity** \u2014 The connection is the weak point. Make sure you&#8217;re using the right <a href=\"\/tag\/thread\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>thread<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"\/tag\/type\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>type<\/strong><\/a> (STC, LTC, BTC, or <a href=\"\/tag\/premium\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>premium<\/strong><\/a>) for your application.<br \/>\n3. **Drift diameter** \u2014 If you&#8217;re running <a href=\"\/tag\/tools\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><a href=\"\/tag\/tool\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>tool<\/strong><\/a>s<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"\/tag\/packers\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Packers<\/strong><\/a> through the casing, the drift needs to be right.<br \/>\n4. **<a href=\"\/tag\/hydrostatic-test\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Hydrostatic test<\/strong><\/a>ing** \u2014 Every pipe should be tested. No exceptions.<br \/>\n5. **<a href=\"\/tag\/non-destructive-testing\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Non-destructive testing<\/strong><\/a>** \u2014 Ultrasonic, electro<a href=\"\/tag\/magnetic\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>magnetic<\/strong><\/a>, or magnetic particle inspection catches defects you can&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n<p>**<a href=\"\/tag\/common\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>common<\/strong><\/a> Mistakes That Cost Money**<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen a lot of casing failures over the years. Here are the <a href=\"\/tag\/pattern\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>pattern<\/strong><\/a>s:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; **Wrong grade for the env<a href=\"\/tag\/iron\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>iron<\/strong><\/a>ment** \u2014 Using P110 in sour service without the right chemistry. Hello, sulfide stress cracking.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Poor connection make-up** \u2014 Over-torqued or under-torqued connections leak. Both are bad.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Inadequate centralization** \u2014 If the casing isn&#8217;t centered in the hole, your cement job will be lopsided. That means poor zonal <a href=\"\/tag\/isolation\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>isolation<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\n&#8211; **Skipping the running inspection** \u2014 Every joint should be inspected before it goes in the hole. Dents, scratches, thread damage \u2014 catch it on the surface, not underground.<\/p>\n<p>**The Bottom Line**<\/p>\n<p>Your casing and tubing string is a <a href=\"\/tag\/long-term\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>long-term<\/strong><\/a> investment.
